What to Expect

  • Subtropical reef diving suitable for all skill levels, with over 1,200 fish species. Most dives are boat dives launched from the beach through the surf.
  • Shore diving is limited; most sites require boat launches. Daily trips run year-round except New Year’s Day. Sites grouped by distance (“mile” markers) from launch site.
  • Diving can be busy during South African school holidays. Advanced sites and deep pinnacles available for experienced divers. Nitrox is available at some operators.

Marine Life Highlights

  • Frequent encounters: tropical fish, hard and soft corals, moray eels, turtles (loggerhead, green), reef sharks, rays.
  • Special sightings: pregnant ragged-tooth sharks (Dec–March, especially at Quarter Mile Reef), dolphins (year-round, more frequent in summer), whale sharks and manta rays (occasionally). Humpback whales pass (late July–September). Hammerhead, tiger, thresher, and bull sharks observed less frequently but possible.
