Getting There

  • By air: Fly to Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB), with direct flights from several North American cities. International connections from Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, and Toronto (seasonal).
  • From airport: 20–30 min taxi or private transfer to West End/West Bay (approx. $25–30 USD per taxi). Some hotels and dive shops offer shuttle options. Shared vans (colectivos) available for budget travelers.

Where to Stay

  • West End: Ideal for a local vibe, walkability, and backpacker-friendly prices. Try Splash Inn, Bay Side Hotel, Hotel Posada Arco Iris for value stays.
  • West Bay: Best for all-inclusive resorts and direct shore diving. The Beach House Roatán offers an upscale experience.
  • Tip: Book ahead in peak season (December–March). Budget accommodation books fast.

What to Expect

  • Gentle conditions with minimal current. Excellent for beginners and skill-building. Reef starts close to shore.
  • Very affordable by Caribbean standards. Roatan offers a relaxed, family-friendly vibe; Utila is cheaper and more party/backpacker-oriented.
  • West End for social/local scene; West Bay for quieter, resort atmosphere and best shore dives.
  • Boat dives predominate, but shore access is good in West Bay. Nitrox widely available. Crowds swell December–March and July–August.

Marine Life Highlights

  • Abundant hawksbill and green turtles, southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks, and Caribbean reef fish (large schools, wrasse, parrotfish).
  • Moray eels, lobsters, octopus, and occasional toadfish. Whale shark sightings rare but possible (more common off Utila).
